Historical Note : AVANTI in ancient Western Malwa was one of the 16 Mahajanapadas & Ujjain was the dominant urban centre of that region around 600 to 500 BC. In the 4th century BC, Avanti lost its importance being henceforth a province of the Mauryan Empire. Before he became the King himself, Ashoka was appointed a Viceroy of Ujjain by his father Bindusara. After Ashoka’s death weak successors followed him & central control soon diminished giving way to local independence.
