Note : The year AH 1174 (beginning in 1760AD) was a tumultuous one for politics in Delhi. The Marathas occupied Delhi after evicting the invading Afghan forces. Suraj Mal was a Maratha partisan and also sided with the Wazir Imad ul-Mulk against the scheming Afghan courtier Najib Khan Rohilla. In late 1759, Imad murdered emperor Alamgir II and placed Shahjahan III on the throne. His reign was brought to an end in 1760 by the Marathas, who deposed him and announced Shah Alam II to be the emperor in absentia, to placate Shuja’a ul-Mulk of Awadh.
