Description

Ancient ; Post-Mauryan city-state coinage of North India, Kaushambi region, copper coin of ‘Shosheni’, Weight : 1.25 Grams ; Very rare
Obv: Brahmi legend Shosheniye. Rev: Traces of elongated crescent.

Note : These coins were formerly recognized to be ‘guild’ issues of Kaushambi, with the legend read as Negamaye. However, the inscription clearly reads Shosheniye and stands as the genitive form of the feminine word ‘Shosheni’. Whether ‘Shosheni’ was the name of a city or a people, remains to be ascertained.
